Prior to starting law school in 2014, Thamara “Tammy” Sordo-Vieira worked as a licensed property and casualty sales producer for a national insurance company. In her role, Tammy studied policies of insurance and made coverage recommendations for her clients. This knowledge provided Tammy with a foundation in insurance defense that would be useful in her eventual legal practice, including her position during law school as a law clerk for an insurance defense law firm.

After being admitted to practice law in the fall of 2017, Tammy joined a private plaintiff’s law firm as an associate attorney, where she assisted the firm’s partners with legal and mediation briefing, client relations, research, and oral advocacy in out-of-court, litigation, and appellate medical malpractice, products liability, and negligence cases. After a year, Tammy returned to the defense side.

Tammy has litigated a wide variety of complex cases in the areas of no-fault, negligence, professional liability, wrongful death, construction, employment, civil rights, municipal, tax and franchises, admiralty, commercial, and premises liability law. Tammy, a native Spanish speaker, has been able to use her bilingual skills when corporate clients from Puerto Rico have needed contract interpretation and legal opinions, as well as when Spanish-speaking individual defendants need translation and guidance throughout court proceedings.

In mid-2021, Tammy joined the appellate department of a large insurance defense law firm, choosing to maintain a hybrid practice that would allow her to continue litigating cases at the trial court level. As an appellate attorney, Tammy briefed and argued complex cases involving issues of statutory interpretation and legislative history, healthcare law, licensure and regulations, workers compensation, premises liability, no-fault, and negligence law.

As both an attendee and speaker at various legal and writing seminars, Tammy brings her five years of unique experience as a hybrid litigation and appellate lawyer to complement the appellate practice group of Jacobs and Diemer. Licensed in Michigan, Tammy has been relied on by clients in the corporate, nonprofit, insurance, employment, and construction industries in arbitration, mediation, litigation, and appellate proceedings in the state and federal courts of Michigan. Tammy has also been retained by national insurers to provide complex coverage opinions involving out-of-state legal issues in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Florida, and Arizona. Tammy also serves as a member of the editorial board of Laches, a legal magazine published by the Oakland County Bar Association.

Tammy was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship for Excellence as a Detroit Mercy Law fellow, a full-tuition scholarship that assisted her in obtaining her law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where she became the Vice President for the Hispanic Law student Association and the Secretary of her class in her third year. Tammy graduated in the top 25% of her class in 2017 with cum laude honors and several awards for writing and oral advocacy in moot court and her medical malpractice and first amendment classes. She obtained her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in criminology with a minor in psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy, where she was a continuous recipient of the Dean’s Award and the Jesuit Founders full-tuition scholarship.
